What is Iyengar Yoga?

What is Iyengar Yoga?

Yoga is an ancient art in a modern world.

The system that has become known as Iyengar Yoga was developed by the world renowned B.K.S. Iyengar. He developed precise asana (posture) and pranayama (breathing) techniques based on the classical yoga sutras of Patanjali and many years of practice.

The Iyengar system allows individuals to make progress according to their own abilities. It is a methodical, progressive, inclusive approach, emphasising detailed correctness and absolute safety. To this end Mr Iyengar developed the use of all manner of yoga props to help the support body with alignment and extension as we explore different postures and to improve ability in a safe, precise manner for you to enjoy the benefits of this magnificent practice both in your posture and general wellbeing.

B.K.S. Iyengar 1918-2014 was introduced to yoga as a 15 year old by renowned yogi T. Krishnamacharay. He started teaching in 1936 and wrote 'Light on Yoga' in 1966.

Mr Iyengar devoted his life to the study, practice, teaching and dissemination of yoga and is still considered as the world's foremost exponent of yoga. As a Guru (teacher) he shared his knowledge generously both with his family and students so we can continue to be inspired today.

"I am really enjoying the Wednesday evening class. I love the precision and discipline of Iyengar and also how the journey of yoga never ends with more to learn in every pose."
